About

“All Eyes On Me”…Jorge Cornell is running for Greensboro City Council -District 5.

We are excited, yet very focused & determined about this years campaign for Greensboro’s City Council, District 5 seat. There is a need for CHANGE, you can feel it, see it, and hear it everywhere you go in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Jorge accepted the challenge to be a voice of the people in the 2009 race for City Council at Large. Although he didn’t win the race, he won the heart of the people. The people are now pushing him to run again.  Jorge was moved by an overwhelming sense of urgency from his community to run again for Greensboro’s City Council. Obligation is an understatement, Jorge feels destined to be  the voice of change in the Black and Brown community.  But this time, things will be different; Jorge has decided to run a more targeted, strategic campaign for the District 5 seat against long time incumbent Trudy Wade. His decision is strategic in order to create a City Council whose hearts belong with the heart of the people.

“All Eyes on Me” is this years campaign slogan and theme. “All Eyes on Me”, simply speaks to each person who desires to be heard, listened to and understood, yet doesn’t have a voice. Jorge Cornell vows to be that voice. Jorge Cornell maintains to keep the attention and focus about the people and for the people.

Words from Jorge:

Once again, I am hopeful, more focused, better prepared, and knowledgeable of the process. This will only be an asset to my community. I know that a better world is possible but that we all need to be heard in order to create it.  I have proved my leadership abilities as the Inca –or leader- of the Almighty Latin King & Queen Nation for the state of North Carolina, and more recently joined the School Safety Committee for the Board of Education.  I will prove the same dedication on City Council, and I will make sure that we are heard. Without us, the future is not possible. Together, we can achieve anything!

About Jorge:

Jorge Cornell, 35, is originally from New York City.  He moved to North Carolina in 2002 with his family.  Quickly, he realized that there were pressing issues in Greensboro that needed to be addressed. He immediately began working on organizing other people in his community to address a variety of inter-related issues, including immigration, street violence, institutional racism, police brutality, and government accountability.  Working together with people from a wide array of backgrounds, Jorge has made significant contributions to building peace and justice in our City.  He is committed to being the voice of the people of Greensboro, especially those who are marginalized and unrepresented in the City.  Jorge would be the first Latino to ever serve on Greensboro City Council.  Though the elections haven’t happened yet, he has already proved his ability to unite people across racial and socio-economic backgrounds and has demonstrated his ability for innovative problem solving.  His abundance of real world life experience, both in New York City and Greensboro, enable him to connect with people that most politicians, police officers, and academics cannot.  A strong example of his unique leadership ability is through his work to unite street organizations (often called gangs) to create a peace treaty in Greensboro.  To learn more about this important work Jorge has been instrumental in facilitating, please read The Paradigm Shift. Most recently, Jorge has teamed up with other community leaders at the Beloved Community Center to create a non-profit temp agency to place under and un-employed workers who are usually discriminated against in the hiring process due to a criminal record or their lack of access to resources.

  1. The Waves of Inspiration and potential unity around a common goal that this campaign Will further create is exciting and motivating. Continue to grow and develop your leadership and field of influence as we all strive to do what many of us were told was impossible.

  2. Hi Jorge. I don’t know much about you. You appear to have a nice family, but the thug motif will get in your way I think. I expect that your progressive in your politics like I am, but in order to challenge the establishment in any meaningful way, you need to appear less threatening with the thug persona. You should look to Al Sharpton as a good example. He became much more effective once he dropped the big gold medallion and “street clothes”. Sharpton’s message is the same, but he doesn’t frighten people anymore and he is far more effective. The latino community I’m sure would rather have someone that looks respectable representing them. God knows the latino community is living a hard as hell life in NC. Don’t give haters a reason to mischaracterize you and your community.

I realize this may seem like you wouldn’t be “authentic” to whoever it is your trying to be authentic for, but its about results isn’t it?

I wouldn’t condone what you did with the police either. Get arrested for protesting injustice. What I saw in that video wasn’t injustice, it was the “papa bear” trying to assert authority over the situation. That’s not civil rights and a waste of time. If your going to be arrested for something, make it more important that what appeared in that scene.

I’m all for supporting the Latino community and I think they need representation. Perhaps your the person, I don’t know. But I know that you would be far more effective with the same message but a different style. Don’t let your passion be mischaracterized by looking like a thug. People are far more intimidated by a well educated and passionate man that looks respectable. You make it too easy for people to dismiss your words because they are too busy looking at what your wearing.

I write this in all due respect for what your trying to accomplish.

  3. As a black woman on the southside, I’m very intrigue by your candidacy. But I must say that I was also disappointed in your arrest. I think you could have handled it better. Better yet you should have avoided the situation. Watching your two precious daughters crying BROKE MY HEART!
With some in the city trying to make the council center right in its idealogy, we need as many progressives on there as possible. So don’t give people an excuse not to vote for you.
I don’t have a problem in your attire as one poster showed, that troublemaker guy ain’t mr.GQ.
You have a chance (a slim one)of making it to the general and you will probably be one of my six in the primaries, but you can not alienate the white progressives that might be incline to vote for you. The most progressive at-large candidates are probably you, Julie, and Marikay, so don’t give up this spot.
Black population in GSO is around 30% if they come out for Mayor Johnson like they should and with the latino edge and the white progressives you could possibly get through. But you are going to need all three to make it open.
If you are serious about this campaign and it isn’t about trying to get publicity please heed this advice.
As I said I plan to vote for you until you give me a reason not to.

  4. Thank you all for your comments. We just wanted to respond and let you know that all of your comments have been read and are being considered. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how you feel about a variety of issues. Together we can greatly improve our city!

  5. Jorge, how can I volunteer to help you?
